ABOUT THE EQUINE ARTWORK PROCESS - Richard Hescox - Equine Art Paintings and Commissions:

Equine Portrait and Equine Painting Commissions:

Equine and Traditional Painting Process 1) Planning the commission. The first step is a conversation between the person commissioning the painting ("the client") and myself. We will discuss exactly what type of painting the client wants. Based on these discussions I will fill out a worksheet describing the various elements and parameters of "the Painting" and will use this worksheet to determine the fee to quote for this commission. If this is acceptable to the client, a "painting commission contract" will be signed and a 50% deposit required.

Equine and Traditional Painting Process Process 2) Beginning the project. I always prefer to photograph the subject myself if possible. That way I can observe their surroundings and mannerisms, and begin making esthetic decisions as I capture various poses and lighting situations. I will take many pictures as I study the subject in various settings. I will discuss with the client where the painting will be displayed and take that into consideration in composing the color scheme. If it is not possible to take my own pictures then I can work from good quality photos supplied by the client.

Equine and Traditional Painting Process Process 3) Sketches and ideas. I use the information gathered to prepare ideas for the overall composition of the painting, and then discuss them with the client. Once we have the basic idea established and the sketch is approved, I then begin to paint, using a combination of different photographs as reference. In this way I can capture just the right setting, expression and pose.

Equine and Traditional Painting Process Process 4) Completing the painting. The painting will then be created within the approximate time frame agreed upon and delivered to the client for final acceptance. Upon acceptance, the final payment (including applicable sales tax for Nevada residents) is due. Upon payment the painting becomes the property of the client. (Sale of the original artwork does not transfer the copyright, which is retained by the artist.)
